Two trawlers in one week with 2600 tons to Iceland
The year 2026
started with quite a lot of trawlers coming to town of Hafnarfjörður in Iceland
not actually with the landings from Icelandic ships
but from ships that are mostly fishing in Greenlandic jurisdiction.
Hafnarfjörður
Two trawlers arrived in Hafnarfjörður,. that is a town not far away from Reykjavík, both with full loads,
and in total these two trawlers arrived with over 2600 tons of catch.
In fact, the distribution of catches by the ships is noteworthy.
Sisimiut
The trawler Sisimiut arrived in Hafnarfjörður with 1307 tons of catch and cod was the mainstay of that catch
or 1184 tons. Sisimiut was fishing off the East Coast of Greenland, just outside the 200-mile territorial limit
in Icelandic territorial waters
Sisimiut is an 82-meter-long trawler and 17.3 meters wide, with a 7,300-horsepower MAN engine, built in 2019
Tuuqaalik
Tuuqaalik, built in 2023, is 82.3 meters long and 18 meters wide, and has a 120-ton freezing capacity per day
the ship has a very large engine, a 9,800-horsepower MAN engine.
Tuuqaalik which arrived in Hafnarfjörður also had a catch of around 1300 tonnes or 1305 tonnes
but cod was not the mainstay there, rather Greenland halibut was the mainstay of the trawler's catch.
990 tonnes of the Greenland halibut were head and tail cut off and then frozen whole
and 314 tonnes were just gutted.
This landing is one of the largest single landings of a trawler with only Greenland halibut that has ever come to Iceland
The trawler was fishing off the West Coast of Greenland and then crossed over to the East Coast and finished the trip there.
Estimated Catch Value
The catch value for Tuuqaalik is not available, but it can be assumed that the average catch value for the trawler was around 550 ISK, ore 3,72 euros per kilo compared to Guðmundur í Nesi RE
from Iceland that is the trawler from ICeland that has been fishing most of Greenland Halibut
and then it can be estimated that the catch value from this giant trip was 720 million ISK
that is about 4,87 million euros
